How to Train to Groom Dogs

The training that goes into becoming a dog groomer depends on how you plan to use your new skill. If you want to get hired by a company that specializes in dog care, you likely need state certification. But if you plan to go into business for yourself you are not obligated to get the same proof of training. No matter what route you choose, however, you still need essential grooming skills to build trust with your customers.

Attend an accredited pet-grooming school. You can find these schools through the National Dog Groomers Association of America. The cost of these schools can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, based on how much time is involved, which can be as little as two weeks and up to five months. The cost is also based on whether you become state certified or just certified through the school. A state certificate and professional training are not required in most cases, but they will give you opportunities to get hired by professionals who require such training.
