How to Get Skunk Spray Off a Dog

Skunk spray has a strong odor because it contains sulfur and other oils. When a skunk sprays your dog, the strong odor can be overwhelming. Home remedies often only mask the odor instead of removing it. When you don't have the money or time to purchase a commercial product, remove the odor with common items around your home. The solution will break down the oils and neutralize the smell.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear rubber gloves and old clothes before you treat the skunk smell on your dog. Wearing old clothing that you do not mind throwing away afterward will protect your good clothes from possible odor damage.

    • 2

Examine the dog for any serious injuries. Check its eyes for redness and discharge. Look for possible skunk bites or cuts that may appear infected due to the skunk spray. Skunk bites are serious because the skunks may transmit rabies. If you locate any injuries, immediately contact your veterinarian.

    • 3

Clean the dog outdoors if possible. Open windows in your home if you must wash the dog indoors.

    • 4

Combine 1 qt. of hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup of baking soda into an open container, such as a large bowl or bucket. Add 1 to 2 tsp. of dishwashing soap to the container. Stir the ingredients and use the solution immediately.

    • 5

Massage the solution onto the dog's fur and skin. Avoid rinsing the dog with water before you apply the solution so that it can penetrate the fur. Avoid applying the solution close to the dog's eyes, mouth or ears.

    • 6

Let the hydrogen-peroxide solution sit for five minutes. Rinse the dog with water to remove the solution. Repeat applying the solution until you remove the odor completely.

    • 7

Dry the dog with a towel to remove any excess water.
