How to Prevent Tear Stains for Malteses

In light colored dogs such as the Maltese, tear stains can be unsightly. The tear stains in the Maltese are actually due to a form of red yeast and bacteria that grow on moist dog hair. If the dog's eyes water excessively, the tears overflow from the eyelid and drain down the dog's face, causing the yeast and bacteria to spread. Allergies, teething, eye irritations, blocked tear ducts, and ear or eye infections can cause the problem. Preventing tear stains is a matter of correcting the underlying problem, and changing the pH level of the dog's tears.

Talk to your veterinarian to rule out medical problems. Conditions such as blocked tear ducts and turned-in eyelashes need to be corrected surgically. Infections may need to be treated with antibiotics.

    • 2

Change your dog's diet. Some dogs are allergic to dyes and other common ingredients found in dog food.

    • 3

Keep the hair around the dog's eyes trimmed. Irritation from hairs rubbing on the surface of the eye can cause them to water.

    • 4

Change the pH of the dog's tears by giving them a small amount of calcium antacid or vinegar each day. You can give your Maltese half of a 500 milligram tablet of antacid, or a teaspoon of white vinegar safely.

Give your Maltese bottled water if you live in an area with very hard water. The mineral content in tap water can irritate the dog's eyes and cause their eyes to water.
