How to Spray a Show Poodle Topknot

Poodles require much more attention than most other breeds. They must be brushed, bathed and clipped on a regular basis for good health and mental fitness. The poodle is very proud and loves to be groomed. A show poodle loves that extra attention. In perfecting the topknot, the dog will just lie down while you prepare it for the ring. Spraying the finished topknot can keep it in position for the show.

Place your dog on the grooming table, lying down in a sphinx position where your dog is down with the rear legs under the dog and the head is straight up and attentive. This gives you the perfect view to work comfortably on the topknot.

Brush the topknot completely, blending in from the neck, and be sure that there are no mats. Lightly spray with a dog conditioning spray as you brush through the topknot. It is important not to brush a dry coat and cause breakage.

Use a comb to fan the hair upward and outward at the top of the head to blend with the rest of the coat. Scissor the topknot to blend in to the hair at the base of the neck and back to create a balanced show style. Further fan the hair in sections from front to back, while spraying each section with conditioning spray.

Spray the finished topknot with a fine mist of coat dressing or hairspray to keep the hair in place. This should be done just prior to entering the show ring. Never over spray, as it can cause the hair to look stiff and lose its natural texture.
