How to Groom a Long Hair Chihuahua

Chihuahuas can be either long hair or short hair, and both types are easy to care for, though long-hair Chihuahuas require additional grooming. Fluffy and sleek in appearance, the long-hair Chihuahua has a soft undercoat, topped with fine hair. Regularly attending to the grooming needs of your long-hair Chihuahua, will help keep it healthy and happy.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Chihuahua's long hair once a week with a soft bristle brush. Regular brushing will keep the coat smooth, and aid in the natural shedding process.

    • 2

Gently wipe and clean food particles around the neck or ruff of your pet's coat with a moist cloth.

    • 3

Brush your Chihuahua's teeth every day with a soft bristle toothbrush. Wrap a gauze cloth around your index finger and massage your pet's gums with it. Daily brushing will prevent your pet's teeth from being affected by tartar, plaque and other dental problems.

    • 4

Bathe your pet once a month with mild shampoo. Take care to prevent water from entering its ears. Wipe it dry completely with a towel after bathing.

    • 5

Trim the nails with a canine toenail clipper, whenever they are overgrown. Do not cut beyond the quick, which is the dog's cuticle, as it will cause pain and bleed.
