Instructions for Cutting a Yorkie's Hair

'Yorkie' is the shortened name of the Yorkshire terrier, a small pooch from the toy dog family. Yorkies have long, single-layer coats, as opposed to double-coated dogs, such as huskies. Coat colors range from steel blue to black to tan, and some yorkies are multi-tonal, such as brown, black and tan. Yorkie coat maintenance is bit more time-consuming than maintenance for other dog breed coats, as the long hair can tangle easily and requires trimming every couple of months. Use coat trimming as an opportunity to give your yorkie a bath and take care of other grooming needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Thoroughly brush your yorkie with a dog brush and follow by combing. Loosen mats between your fingers before combing through; and avoid jerking at knots and mats, which can cause the hair to break as well as hurt your dog.

    • 2

Bathe the dog with dog shampoo and conditioner and towel dry. Allow the dog's hair to dry completely before cutting to avoid uneven cuts.

    • 3

Use a 7 or 10 clipper blade to trim the dog's hair in 2- to 4-inch sections where needed, such as above the eyes, on the rear and chest area where hair grows the fastest, and on the body, so the hair does not drag on the floor. Shape the yorkie's 'beard' as desired.

Repeat every one or two months.
