Instructions on Cutting a Poodle's Hair

The poodle is a recognizable dog mainly because of its thick and curly coat. Although the poodle's mane is fabulous, during the summer months it could become hazardous for your dog to maintain that amount of fur. Cutting your poodle's hair can save you money on dog grooming expenses and it may save your pup from heat exhaustion.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your poodle in a lukewarm bath. Use a pH-balanced shampoo and conditioner to cleanse its overall coat.

    • 2

Dry your poodle's hair with a towel or you can use a hair dryer on the lowest setting.

    • 3

Plug in your electric hair clippers and attach the No. 5 blade to the equipment. Turn the clippers on and run the clippers up and down your poodle's body in an even motion. Pay attention to the amount of hair that you are cutting. You should leave approximately 1 inch of hair on the poodle's body to prevent skin irritations.

    • 4

Detach the No. 5 blade and attach the No. 10 blade to the clippers. Run the clippers up and down the poodle's face, while paying special attention to avoid coming in contact with the poodle's eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

    • 5

Run the clippers back and forth across the poodle's feet. Run the clippers up and down the poodle's tail.

    • 6

Lay the poodle on its side and run the clippers up and down your poodle's belly, while paying special attention not to touch the skin near the poodle's genitals.

    • 7

Clip the flyaway hairs with a pair of dog grooming scissors to complete the haircut. Brush your poodle's hair with a doggy brush to remove any pieces of cut hair.
