Instructions
Separate the fur that is matted with your fingers. If the mat is not pulling apart, spray a leave-in conditioner or detangler spray onto the matted area. Continue working the fur apart with your fingers.
Comb the hair starting at the ends using a slicker brush and work your way up. Do not tug too hard on the hair to avoid hurting the dog. Spray additional detangler as you work your way through the mat. Untangle as much of the mat as possible with the slicker brush.
Comb portions of the mat that were not broken apart using the slicker brush. Using the tip of the comb, start from the bottom again working upward. Spray on additional detangler while you work.
Remove the mat if it's not coming apart with a slicker brush or comb. Use scissors or clippers to cut the hair off completely. Use extreme caution when doing this as mats are generally found near the dog's skin. Incorrect use of scissors or clippers can result in cutting the dog's skin. Use a comb and place it at the top of the mat between the dog's skin and where you plan to cut. Cut carefully and slowly, keeping a close eye on the location of the scissors so you don't come in contact with the dog's skin.
Call a professional groomer if you have tried each method to remove the mat without success. Seek professional assistance if you are nervous about cutting out the mat yourself.
