Getting the Job Done
Use your grooming comb to part the hair of your sheepdog into halves. You may need to divide this task into more than one session in order not to overwhelm your dog if you have gone too long between groomings.
Take your slicker brush and gently brush out your dog's hair in rows. If you come across tangles, gently pull them apart with your fingers to tease them out. Use your comb to release the tangle. Blend the hairs into the rest of the coat with the slicker brush.
Use your de-matting comb if you come across an actual matted clump of hair. It may be necessary, though not desirable, to cut through the matted area with scissors in order to comb out the mat. Show dogs should not be cut with rounded-tipped scissors unless it is absolutely necessary.
Continue to brush with your slicker brush in rows until the entire dog has been brushed free of tangles and mats. This process can take several hours. More, if the dog has been neglected; less if grooming takes place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Use your rounded-tipped brush to give overall lift and fluff to your now mat-free dog. Be sure to offer your companion ample treats throughout the grooming process to make it enjoyable for both of you.
