How to Tape a Chihuahua's Ears to Make Them Stand

Chihuahuas are originally from Mexico and are a small breed of dog. They are classified as having small heads, erect ears and are either short- or long-haired. Although they generally do have ears that stand straight up, there are some exceptions. Taping the ears will correct this. It is not a difficult process, and with a little time and effort, the end product will be ears that are perky and upright.

Instructions

Take the backer rod, which can be purchased at your local home supply shop, and cut out two strips. Make sure they are both 1 inch longer than the ears of the Chihuahua. A backer rod is a rod-shaped piece of foam that is stiff and round.

    • 2

Wrap the medical tape around the first piece of rod, spiraling the tape up, folding it over at the end and spiraling it back down with the sticky side facing out. Cut off the excess tape. Repeat this step with the second rod.

    • 3

Rest the rod inside the bottom cup of Chihuahua's ear, pressing the ear flap firmly against the rod.

    • 4

Wrap a piece of medical tape around the ear and the rod, starting from the top and working your way down. Make sure the tape is tight enough to hold the ear securely in place, but not so tight that it cuts off circulation.

    • 5

Repeat the taping process with the other ear. Run a final piece of tape criss-crossed between the rods to make sure the rods remain upright and make properly erect ears.

    • 6

The wrap should remain on the ears for approximately seven days. At the end of the seven days, remove the tape and rod to let the ears rest for a day. Check to see if the ears appear a bit weak. If so, repeat the taping process and leave it on for another seven days before checking again.
