How to Clean the Teeth of Senior Dogs

Proper dental care is important in a dog at any age, especially as the dog gets older. A senior dog may already suffer from several dental issues, including tooth breakage, tooth loss and bad breath. Proper doggie dental care will ensure that its teeth and gums remain strong through the rest of its years.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the bristles of a soft tooth brush with dog toothpaste. This can be purchased at pet stores or through a veterinarian. Do not use human toothpaste or baking soda, as both of these can make the dog ill.

    • 2

Sit down and position yourself next to the dog, so that you can easily access its mouth. The dog should be relaxed when performing the brushing. A dog that is excited and ready for activity will be less receptive to the cleaning process.

    • 3

Open the dog's mouth with one hand and begin to clean its upper teeth and gum line. Be careful if the dog has broken or injured teeth, as this could make the injury worse. Work the toothpaste in a circular motion and reapply as needed.

    • 4

Continue to brush the dog's teeth, this time concentrating on the lower teeth and gum line. Place more toothpaste onto the brush as needed.

    • 5

Give the dog a treat for sitting patiently and allowing you to brush its teeth.
