Instructions
Purchase a child's sweater or choose one of your own, preferably a V-neck style. This allows the head opening to be larger without having to make alterations.
Cut the sleeves out of the sweater, leaving 1 inch at the shoulder that can be turned under and hemmed.
Thread a large yarn craft needle with a matching color yarn. A contrasting color can be used for enhancing the leg holes if you like.
Sew a regular row of straight stitches around the edges of the excess hem material at the arm holes. This stay stitching keeps the edges from raveling. Fold this edge in and hem the edges using the yarn needle and yarn. Sew the other arm hole the same way.
Put the sweater on the dog and use a marker to make a dot where the openings should be for back legs. If the circumference of the sweater is too large, make a fold on the inside and sew a straight seam up the length of the sweater to secure the fold. Trim the excess material.
Make a small cut on each back leg spot in the area that was marked. Weave in as many of the loose threads as you can. Sew a row of stay stitching around the holes and hem the openings so they are secure.
