Clipping Your Dog With Andis Clippers
Prepare a clean quiet area near an electrical outlet where you will groom your dog without distractions. Have all tools ready such as clippers, various blades, nail clippers, hemostats and scissors. You'll also need a brush and a comb. If you plan to groom your dog regularly, a portable folding grooming table would be a great and fairly inexpensive asset. Some tables come with a grooming arm which holds a noose to keep dog in place during grooming.
Brush dog thoroughly before bathing and grooming. It is imperative to remove mats before a bath.
Bathe and blow dry your dog's fur before the process of clipping the fur with your Andis clippers.
Clip fur within your dog's pads on the paws with aorblade. Choice of blade depends on how short you want the fur and how confident you are getting close to the skin. The higher the number, the closer the cut. Clip the pad in a "V" under the paw, not in between the "toes".
Select a
blade to trim the private areas. Move the clipper gently in the direction of the hair growth. Clipping against the growth will create a shorter cut but may also cause a clipper irritation (sometimes referred to as clipper burn) as well.
Decide how short you want your dog's fur to be and choose the blade appropriate for that length. For a longer length, about an inch, choose a number #4 blade. Begin clipping through the thick fur at the base of the neck and throat with smooth strokes going with the growth of the hair. Once you can find an area to get started, continue in the same motion all along the back and down the legs. If the hair is too thick or is matted, you may need to go with a different blade for a shorter cut. The closer the cut is to the skin, the easier it is for the blade to get under the thick fur.
Be prepared with a clipper coolant and/or lubricant to use when blades get hot while grooming. A dog with thick fur will require a longer time to clip, causing the blade to get hot. Spray the blade whenever you feel it getting warm to avoid burning your dog with a hot blade.
Scissoring may be required for a finished look once you have completed clipping your dog safely.
