How to Take Care of a Chi-Poo's Hair

Chi-poos are a designer breed regarded for their sweet temperament and intelligence. As with any hybrid breed, they can display the characteristics of either of their parents. Chi-poos--also known as poochies, choodles and wapoos--can have smooth, curly or wavy hair that is either short, like a chihuahua, or long like a poodle. No matter the type, however, chi-poos need regular grooming because they typically have sensitive skin and overactive tear glands. When caring for your chi poo, set up a regular grooming and bathing routine at an early age, and your dog will have a clean, shiny coat and healthy skin.

Instructions

  1. Grooming Your Chi-Poo

    • 1

Brush the chi-poo's fur gently, using the soft bristle brush. This should be done at least twice a week, possibly more if your dog has long hair.

    • 2

Comb out the hair around the chi-poo's eyes. This area can often can become matted and wet because of overactive tear glands and should be combed three times a week.

    • 3

Wipe your chi-poo down with a dog bath wipe once a week. This will keep the coat fresh and clean-smelling in between baths. For longer-haired chi-poos, do this twice a week.

Bathing Your Chi-Poo Once Every Six Weeks

    • 4

Fill a small tub or your kitchen sink with lukewarm water.

    • 5

Brush down your chi-poo with the soft bristle brush to remove any excess hair or dirt. Gently place it in the water. Sometimes this makes dogs nervous; help to calm your chi-poo by stroking it or talking to it softly.

    • 6

Mix a quarter-sized dollop of shampoo with 1/4 cup water and work this mixture into a lather.

    • 7

Rub your chi-poo down with soap, working it into the fur in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly.

    • 8

Remove your chi-poo from the sink and dry it off with a soft towel. Once the chi-poo is completely dry, brush it again with a wide-tooth comb to get rid of any tangles from the bath.
