Ketoconazole Shampoo for Dogs

Canines are susceptible to developing yeast infections in moist, warm areas such as genitals, ears and lips. Yeast cells feed on the oils on the canine's skin and rapidly multiply, causing a rash. Veterinary care is needed to confirm the condition.
  1. What it Treats

    • Ketoconazole shampoo is effective in treating Malassezia dermatitis and ringworm. It works by destroying the cellular wall of fungus and yeast.

    Symptoms to Watch For

    • Malassezia dermatitis is characterized by a rash which is red, itchy and may have a yellow-tinted scaling and/or odor. Dogs often scratch affected areas until the skin becomes raw and bleeding; treatment is needed to eradicate the infection

    Where to Get It

    • Ketoconazole shampoo is prescribed by a veterinarian. Some formulations also have additional medicated ingredients such as chlorhexine gluconate or acetic acid to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

    Significance

    • Applying ketoconazole shampoo delivers medication right to the source of the infection. Additionally, it alleviates the itching and inflammation associated with the infection while killing the organisms causing the condition.

    Instructions for Use

    • Wet the dog's hair, massaging the shampoo into the dog's coat and rinsing. Apply the shampoo a second time, lathering and allowing it to sit for five to 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Repeat two to three times weekly for four weeks or as instructed by a veterinarian.
