How to Build a Grooming Table

Many breeds of dogs require routine grooming to stay clean and healthy. Whether you work at a veterinary clinic or you simply wish to groom your dogs at home, having a grooming table of your own may be a good idea. Commercial grooming tables can easily cost several hundred dollars. If you want to build your own table, you can buy all of the required materials and assemble the table in one afternoon.

Instructions

  1. Building and Assembling the Table

    • 1

Measure and cut a piece of 3/4-inch plywood that is 24 inches wide by 48 inches long. Clamp the piece of wood to your work bench. Round all four corners of the wood with a router, using a 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch router bit. Remove the clamp.

    • 2

Place some old newspapers on your work bench. Set the wood on the newspapers. Apply a coat of urethane to the top side and allow to dry. Flip the wood over, apply a coat of urethane to the other side and allow to dry. Repeat this process so that you have two coats of urethane on each side. Make sure to stain the edges and sides of the wood as well.

    • 3

Cut the metal collapsible table legs down to 24 inches tall using a pipe cutter. Place the table legs on the underside of the wood. Trace the bolt hole positions with your pencil. Remove the table legs and drill holes in all of the spots you just marked.

    • 4

Place the table legs back on the wood. Push bolts through the wood and bolt holes from the top side. Attach a washer and nut to each bolt to hold the legs in place. Tighten the nuts with a nut driver or socket wrench.

    • 5

Turn the table over and extend the legs. Apply a ring of double-sided Velcro tape around the edges of the top of the wood. Cut a rubber mat to 24-by-48 inches. Put a ring of Velcro tape around the edges of one side of the mat. Line up the mat edges with the table, and place the mat on top of the table. Push down on the mat to make sure it adheres to the table top.
