How to Shave a Dog With Clippers

Shaving your dog in the summer can be helpful for dogs with long coats that get matted easily or dogs that swim on a regular basis. Excessive shedding will stop temporarily and bathing will be easier. Fleas and ticks are easier to find on a shaved dog. Shaving can also help dogs that are prone to hot spots or fungal conditions, and it may help if your dog is unusually smelly.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a work space. Lay out the clippers, blades and anything else you may need so it will be within an arm's reach when you are shaving your dog. Set up a table or shaving area.

    • 2

Secure your dog using a collar with the leash attached to an overhead support. Make sure your dog has enough room to move his head.

    • 3

Shave the dog's face using a no. 10 blade. Use extreme caution. Stay at least an inch from the eyes. If necessary, wait until the dog calms down.

    • 4

Shave the legs and the tail.

Switch to a blade for longer hair. Shave the dog's body, starting behind the head and working your way back to the tail. Shave the underside of the dog carefully, pulling skin taught as necessary.
