How to Use Jergens Lotion on Dogs

Sometimes dogs can suffer from dry skin or skin irritations. When it becomes a concern, the best thing to do is to take your dog to the veterinarian for a diagnosis and the proper medication. However, if your dog does not seem uncomfortable and you simply want to cleanse and moisturize its skin, you can do this in the comfort of your own home with dog shampoo and lotion.

Bathe the dog in either a bathtub or a large tub outside. You can even bathe very small dogs in the sink. Use dog shampoo and scrub it into the dog's hair, avoiding the eyes and the insides of the ears and mouth. Thoroughly wash all of the shampoo off of the dog to avoid dry skin.

Apply dog conditioner (or a little bit of gentle human conditioner) to the dog's coat and leave it in for a minute or two. Thoroughly rinse the dog and gently dry it off with a towel.

Apply Jergens Sensitive Skin Relief Fragrance Free Daily Moisturizer lightly to the dog. It is important to use a gentle moisturizer such as this one because, according to Jergens, it is hypoallergenic, 100 percent dye free, 100 percent fragrance free and 100 percent lanolin free. For a small dog, dispense only about a dime to quarter size amount of lotion into your hands and lightly apply it evenly to the dog. For a medium to large dog, use a quarter to half dollar size or about a tablespoon.

Groom the dog as needed and reapply lotion to lightly moisturize the dog's skin. According to the website Best Friends Pet Care, dogs who are regularly groomed have a healthier and shinier coat. However, if your dog's skin does not improve or becomes irritated, discontinue product use and take the dog to the veterinarian.
