How to Get Dirt Out of a Dog's Eye

Some dirt around a dog's eye is normal, according to the Pets website. The body's natural defense is to gather all the dust and dirt particles that would normally go directly into the eye and push them to the corner of the eye instead. If your dog's eye looks red or inflamed or if your dog has thick green or yellow discharge coming from the eye, you should take your dog to the veterinarian. If there is just dirt in the eye and the eye does not look infected, you can try to get it out yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your dog in the bathtub. If you have a large dog, you only need to place its head over the bathtub.

    • 2

Clean your dog's face and eyes with a wet washcloth. Wash your dog's face the same way you wash your own face.

    • 3

Use a cotton ball with peroxide on it to clean stained fur around the eye. Some breeds, such as the shi-tzu, Pekingese, pug and Lhasa apso, are prone to discharge from the eyes, staining the hair around the eyes.

    • 4

Flush out the eye with a solution of one tsp. of salt that you mix with one pt. of water. Soak a cotton ball in this solution. Squeeze the solution into the eye, but do not touch the eye with the cotton ball.

    • 5

      Rinse the eye with water.

    • 6

Examine the eyes after you clean them for any injury or irritation.
