How to Use a Dremel on a Dog

Cutting your dog's nails is likely an uncomfortable and possibly painful experience for both you and your pet. Owners and dogs are equally scared of an accidentally deep cut. Luckily there are other options besides clippers. A dremel tool is a small oscillating power tool that rapidly rotates a small piece of sandpaper. Although it is commonly used in workshops for sanding wood, a dremel tool is also a good alternative for filing and smoothing your dog's nails.

Instructions

Turn the dremel tool on to get the dog accustomed to the noise of the machine. Once the dog is settled, you can then turn the tool on in close proximity to the dog. Offer the dog treats to keep him close to the tool until he appears comfortable.

    • 2

Stay relaxed and your dog will feel more relaxed. Sit in a comfortable position and hold the dog either in your lap or seated comfortably beside you with its paws in your lap.

    • 3

Take one of your dog's paws in your hand and press the pad of the foot to make the nails extend outward. Turn the dremel tool on low speed. Touch the tool to the tip of the first nail.

    • 4

Give the dog a treat, as she will likely be skittish because of the vibrations of the tool. Once she again appears calm, pick the paw back up. Identify the quick, or the vein that feeds the nail, as a darker visible line in the center of the nail.

Sand the nail at a 45-degree angle, avoiding the quick, until the nail is even with the bottom of the paw or the nails do not touch the floor anymore when the dog is standing. Repeat with each nail on the front paws until complete.
