How to Remove a Dog Mat

Even with occasional grooming and brushing, dogs' fur sometimes knots together, creating mats. These mats might start forming around stickers from plants or when snow clumps fur together. Some breeds of dogs are prone to mats naturally and require extra grooming to keep their fur mat-free. You should never leave mats in your dog's fur, even small ones, because they tend to get larger and harder over time. Matured mats take even more time and care to properly remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the mat with a conditioner or de-tangling spray and work it in with your fingers.

    • 2

Try to pull the mat apart as much as possible with just your hands.

    • 3

Use the comb to try and brush out the mat, starting at the end of the mat and working toward the roots.

    • 4

Switch to using slicker brush if the mat doesn't begin to loosen with the comb.

    • 5

Alternate between the comb and brush as you see fit until the mat brushes out or it becomes clear that you will need to cut it out.

    • 6

Use clippers or scissors to cut the mat out if it is too developed to comb out. Be very careful not to cut the dog's skin as you snip the mat.

    • 7

Take your dog to the vet if you don't feel comfortable cutting the mat out yourself.
