How to Minimize or Eliminate Dog Hair Shedding

Excessive dog hair around the house can become a lot of work to clean up, especially during the peak shedding times in the fall and spring. The amount of shedding is specific to every dog. Some factors that affect the amount of shedding include breed, stress, diet and grooming. You can limit shedding by regulating those factors to optimum levels. There is no true way to eliminate shedding but there are breeds that shed very little that make suitable companions to people with allergies.

German Shepherds should be brushed daily to reduce shedding.

Know the amount and kind of grooming that is right for your dog and follow accordingly. For example, a German Shepherd needs to be brushed daily with a rake brush and bathed about once a month.

Use a gentle dog shampoo when bathing. Gentle shampoos are mild to the skin and can be effective in reducing shedding.

Feed your dog a quality dog food. A balance in nutrition will help the health of your dog's coat and will reduce shedding.

Make sure your dog doesn't have any health problems such as ringworm or cancer. It is normal for a dog to shed but if your dog has bald patches he should be seen by a veterinarian.

Walking your dog can help manage his stress.

Manage your dog's stress by removing the stressor/situation or putting him at ease with attention. Examples of stressors include: leaving him tied up, illness, a change in relationships (such as births or deaths) or boredom. Take your dog for walks, play with him, and comfort him when he is whining or anxious.
