How to Trim a Big Dogs Nails

Ask many dog owners and they will tell you one of the things they dread most is trimming their dog's nails. The process can be even more trying if the dog is a larger breed, such as a Great Dane or a St. Bernard. A smaller dog often can be subdued with a treat and a towel. Unfortunately, this strategy may not be as effective on a dog that might weigh as much as its owner.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the dog on its side on top of a grooming table or any raised surface large enough to accommodate its body. The dog will be easier to handle if it is raised, as opposed to on the floor.

    • 2

Ask a friend or family member to assist you. It will be difficult to subdue a larger breed dog by yourself. This friend should also have a ready supply of treats to soothe the dog during the experience.

    • 3

Ask the friend to hold the dog's head in place. The friend can use treats to distract the dog and help keep it calmer. The friend should also stand above the dog to make it easier for you to grasp the dog's feet.

    • 4

Firmly grasp the dog's front paw and pull it straight as you stand behind it. Place your weight on the top half of the dog by draping yourself over it slightly. Cut the dog's nails on each front leg with Guillotine-style dog nail clippers, which can be purchased at most pet supply stores. Cut the nail approximately 2 mm above the quick, which is the darker shaded lower portion of the dog's nails.

    • 5

Move your body down and clip the dog's nails on its hind legs in the same fashion as the nails on the front legs were clipped.

    • 6

Place a small amount of styptic powder onto the dog's nails and hold it firmly against the affected nail if any bleeding occurs. This powder will help stop the bleeding and will not harm the dog or cause an infection.
