How to Make an Ear Cleaning Solution With Vinegar for a Dog

Unlike the ear canals of humans, which are horizontal, dogs have L-shaped ear canals which makes it easier for dirt and wax to build up and become trapped. Build-up of any substance in a dog's ears can cause discomfort, odor and the occasional trip to the veternarian's office for ear problems. While you can purchase commercial products to clean your dog's ears, a simple vinegar solution will help keep your dog's ears clean and healthy, naturally.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons water in a bowl. Draw enough of the mixture into an eye dropper to fill it one-quarter of the way.

    • 2

Lift the flap of your dog's ear up towards the ceiling to open up and straighten the ear canal.

    • 3
An eye dropper helps you administer a small amount to the right location.

Drop the vinegar solution, slowly, into your dog's ear. Hold the eye dropper above the ear, not in it. Allow the vinegar solution to sit in your dog's ear canal for five seconds.

    • 4

Massage the lower portion of your dog's ear, near the base of the ear, to work the vinegar solution around in the ear canal. It's normal to hear a squishing sound.

    • 5

Wrap a soft tissue around one finger and gently insert it into the opening of your dog's ear. Avoid pushing into the ear canal. Tip your dog's head to the side to assist in draining the vinegar solution and anything else loosened from the ear canal.

    • 6

Wipe around the inside of your dog's ear using the soft cloth.

    • 7

Apply dog ear drying powder to your dog's ears, following the directions on the package.
