Homemade Dog Conditioner

Dogs, like people, have different types of hair. A long-haired breed of canine will benefit from a conditioner to help prevent mats and tangles in his coat. Though many different brands of dog conditioners are on the market, you can make your own conditioner at home. Homemade dog conditioner can help you save money and give you peace of mind because you won't have to spend time determining what type of ingredients were used to formulate the product.

Instructions

  1. Method 1

    • 1

In a bowl pour 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 2 tsp. of olive oil and two drops of vanilla extract.

    • 2

Crack one egg into a separate bowl and whip with an electric mixer on high until frothy. Turn the mixer to low and pour in 1 cup of milk and follow with 1/2 cup of water.

    • 3

Pour 1 tbsp of honey into a small microwave-safe dish and heat on medium heat for 45 seconds, or until it is of pouring consistency. Pour it into the egg, milk and water mixture and stir it gently into the mixture.

    • 4

Put a small banana in a large bowl and mash with a fork. Cut open an avocado with a knife, remove the pit and scoop out the insides. Place the avocado in the bowl and mash with a fork.

    • 5

Put 1 cup of mayonnaise in a large plastic bag with a seal. Spoon the mashed banana and avocado into the bag and seal the bag. Knead the bag to mix the contents together. Stop kneading when the mixture appears to be green-yellow in color.

    • 6

Cut off a diagonal corner of the bottom of the bag with a pair of scissors. Squeeze the mixture into the egg mixture in the bowl. Fold the banana, avocado and mayonnaise mixture into the egg mixture. Pour the oils from Step 1 into the mixture and stir gently to combine.

    • 7

Place the bowl of conditioner in the refrigerator for 40 minutes. Apply to your dog's hair after shampooing by patting it evenly on its coat and combing it through the hair. Allow the conditioner to remain on the hair for 25 minutes. Rinse well before blotting your dog dry with towels.

    Method 2

    • 8

Pour 2 cups of water in a pot and bring the water to a rolling boil then remove from the heat. A rolling boil means that the countless bubbles are rapidly rising from the bottom of the pot and popping on the surface.

    • 9

Pour 1 tsp. of dried rosemary or 1 tbsp. of fresh rosemary into the hot water, stir in with a spoon, and cover the pot with a lid to allow the water and rosemary to steep for 10 minutes.

    • 10

Pour the water and the rosemary through a fine mesh strainer into bowl and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.

    • 11

Wash your pet with its normal shampoo and rinse well. Pour the cooled water and rosemary over your pet's fur. Do not rinse out. Blot your pet dry with towels to remove excess water and allow her fur to air dry.
