How to Clip a Poodle Puppy

Poodles have curly hair that can quickly become matted and dirty; frequent maintenance is essential. Professional groomers can handle the bathing, brushing and clipping, but they can be expensive. Some people choose to groom their poodles themselves.

Instructions

Make sure that clipper blades are sharp, and have clipper lubricant and clean cloths handy. Read the label that came with your clipper blades and make sure they're designed for a poodle's curly hair.

Wash your poodle puppy and towel him dry. Then allow him to fully air dry. Dogs should always be clean and dry for easy, pain-free clipping.

    • 3

Put a leash and collar on your puppy, to hold him while you're clipping. Even mature, experienced dogs need collars during clipping. Decide on a plan for clipping your puppy. Although professional groomers offer a wide range of different cuts, puppies are better off with full-body shaves, which keep them cleaner and cooler.

Begin clipping your puppy once he's completely dry. Start on the puppy's back, and move the clippers in long, slow strokes against the growth of the hair. Press only hard enough to shave the poodle's hair to within 1/2 inch of his skin. Pressing too hard may cut your puppy.

Move on to trickier areas like the neck, face and legs once you've got a feel for the clippers. Take frequent breaks to give your puppy time to rest and the clippers time to cool. Take these opportunities to wipe loose hair off your puppy with the towel and lubricate the clippers to keep them running smoothly.
