A Natural Way to Get Rid of Skunk Smell on Dogs

It's not unusual for a dog to get into trouble when it encounters a skunk. Dogs are curious and interested in other animals. Ignoring a stamping skunk will get him sprayed. Fortunately, a few simple household ingredients and a little bit of time are all you need to de-scent your beloved pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your dog for eye irritation or injuries. If you see redness in the eyes, use a mild saline eye drop to wash the spray away. If you see a bite, take your dog to the vet immediately--it could be at risk for rabies.

    • 2

Wipe excess spray off your dog. Use old rags or disposable paper towels to rub down your pet's fur. Some animals will be difficult to handle, but others actually enjoy the grooming. Wear protective clothing to prevent the skunk smell from sticking to your skin.

    • 3

Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 qt. household hydrogen peroxide, ½ cup of baking soda, and 2 tsp. of liquid hand soap or dish detergent in a medium-sized bucket. The mixture should begin to fizz.

    • 4

Wash your dog with the de-scenting mixture while it's still fizzing. Rub it into your pet's fur, and repeat the process until you have used up the entire mixture. Allow it to remain in your dog's fur for five to 10 minutes.

    • 5

Rinse your dog to remove the de-scenting mixture and skunk spray. Dry your dog thoroughly. Repeat the process if any scent remains.
