How to Change a Dog's Diaper

Caring for a dog that loses control of its bodily functions is a challenge, but many dog owners are willing to do whatever is necessary to keep their pet comfortable. Diapers may be necessary after a dog is injured or has surgery, or for an aging or menstruating dog. Convert baby diapers for dog use with a little bit of preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the soiled diaper from the dog. Slide the diaper off the dog's tail, making sure that any waste stays contained in the diaper. Wipe the dog's rear area with paper toweling or place the dog in a bathtub while removing the diaper and spray the dog's rear area with warm water.

    • 2

Dispose of the diaper and wash hands thoroughly. If you rinsed off the dog in the bathtub, use ammonia to wipe out the bathtub and any other area that came in contact with the dog's waste.

    • 3

Prepare the diaper size that meets the dog's needs. A large dog will need a larger diaper.

    • 4

Prepare a diaper to allow the dog's tail free movement. Cut out a small circle so the tail can slide through the diaper.

    • 5

Untape the sides of the diaper.

    • 6

Slide the dog's tail through the pre-cut hole while the dog stands.

    • 7

Tape both sides of the diaper quickly and secure tightly. Everything should happen quickly when changing a dog's diaper to prevent the dog from bolting during the procedure. Keep a leash on the dog if it is not comfortable with the procedure.
