Instructions
Trim the ear hair to soften the shape of the ears. Exercise caution to ensure that you do not trim the ears themselves, but rather the hairs extending beyond the ears. The best way to do this is to hold the tip of the ear between your fingers and only trim the hair that protrudes past your fingers. Trim all the way around the ear to soften the points.
Brush all of the hair on the head forward, then carefully trim the hair so that a circle frames the face. This will create the puffy circular cut around the face, framing the facial features. Cut any excess so that only this circle remains around the face.
Shape the chest and belly by brushing the chest hair up and carefully trimming it at an angle. Trimming the chest shorter is ideal because it prevents burs from sticking to the dog. This also helps to create the circular shape of the Pomeranian. Trim the underneath area in a semicircle shape beginning at 1/3 up on the front leg, and repeat the same process with the back legs so all four legs have semicircular haircuts.
Trim behind the tail area. Twist the hair of the tail up to get the excess hair out of the way while you trim the hair on the flanks and around the base of the tail. Use thinning scissors to trim this hair evenly from end to end before you release the tail.
Trim the hair on the feet to tidy them up. Trim both the tops of the feet and underneath. Most Pomeranians will tolerate laying on their back to have their feet groomed, but this may take time and practice to achieve. Now is also a good time to trim the dog's nails, since you are already working on his feet.
Use trimming scissors with teeth on both sides to gently touch up the entire haircut. There are bound to be stray hairs that need touching up, and now is the time to tackle them. Remove any stray hairs and round out the cut around the face and along the underside to create the popular Pomeranian "show cut."
