How to Care for the Coat of Bichon Dogs

Bichon Frise dogs have white curly hair that requires continual upkeep. Because the hair is soft and cottony, it has a tendency to become matted and tangled. Without proper care, the Bichon's hair can become so distressed it requires shaving. To keep your Bichon̵7;s hair in good shape, take care of it daily.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Bichon Frise̵7;s hair once a day with a slicker brush. The brushing will prevent tangles and mats by removing any undercoat or hair shed on the bichon.

    • 2

Bathe your Bichon once a month. To keep the coat extra white, use a bluing shampoo designed to enhance the color of your dog̵7;s coat. Be sure to brush and remove any tangles or mats before bathing your Bichon, as water can make it worse.

    • 3

Dry your Bichon̵7;s hair with a blow or force dryer, if possible. Not only will drying the hair create volume, but it will also prevent the damp hair from become knotted.

    • 4

Brush the hair after it is dried to remove any tangles that might have formed. Use a detangling spray to make removal easier for both you and your Bichon.

    • 5

Use a tear stain remover as needed on your bichon. Tear stains are darkened hair under a dog̵7;s eyes that are caused by blocked tear ducts. The stains show up easily because the Bichon̵7;s hair is white. A stain remover will take the dark color out of the hair and can help prevent future staining.

Cut your Bichon̵7;s hair yourself, or take the dog to a groomer as needed. The body hair and hair around the feet, genitals, face and legs should be trimmed or cut every three to five weeks, according to PetGroomer.com.
