How to Clip a Sheltie

Clipping a Shetland sheepdog (sheltie) is no easy feat. Sheltie's have two coats--an inner coat that keeps them warm and an outer coat that protects their skin from the sun. When clipping a sheltie, it's important to adhere to a certain approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a sheltie's coat by applying water from a spray bottle. Brush the hair out, making sure to remove all knots and matted hair.

    • 2

Use trimming shears to trim the rear of the sheltie. This includes hair on the back of the legs and near the anus. Moisten the hair with the spray bottle, brush with a comb to get all knots/mats out, and--pointing the scissors at an angle toward the ground--clip from top to bottom.

    • 3

Shave the genital area with a trimmer, setting the guard on the blade around 10. Do so carefully, as this is a sensitive area on any dog.

    • 4

Clip the belly and chest area of a sheltie with scissors. With the dog in an upright standing position, clip the hair in a straight line, taking care to keep the cut as symmetrical as possible.

    • 5

Clip the ears. Brush the ears with a brush or comb to rid the area of all knots, then clip with scissors. Take special care, as a dog's ears are quite sensitive.
