Spray your dog's hair with leave-in conditioner. This helps discourage tangles and makes brushing easier. It also fortifies and strengthens the hair.

Brush your dog's hair every day unless you are using wraps on it. One of the biggest contributors to thin hair is breakage. Mats and tangles increase hair breakage dramatically. Start out with the top layer and use the comb first, then the brush to work out tangles and smooth down hair.

Wrap your dog's hair. This will protect the hair from breakage and help it grow more quickly. Fold tresses inside the silk wraps, then secure the wraps in place with a thick rubber band. The band should not touch any part of the dog's hair. Change these wraps every two days to prevent mildew and fungal infections. If you are not wrapping your dog's hair, then you should be brushing everyday. If you are wrapping, then you can brush each time you change the wraps.

Make sure your pet is getting the proper nutrition. A veterinarian can let you know if your Maltese needs a vitamin supplement to help him grow thicker hair or if his diet is providing all the nutrition necessary for a thick, healthy coat.
