How to Wash a Dog in the Bathtub

Washing a dog in a bathtub is sometimes the only option available if living in an apartment or during cold weather. By using a calm and gentle manner, it can be a pleasurable way to introduce a young dog to a regular grooming routine. A bathtub also provides an enclosed space that makes it easier to control more difficult dogs that may want to escape during their bath. With washing supplies within easy reach, you can expect to have a clean and happy dog in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by giving your dog a quick brush to remove any loose hairs, tangles or mats. Put a cotton ball in each of his ears to keep water from getting into the ear canals.

    • 2

Place a rubber mat in the bathtub to keep your dog from slipping. Fill up the bathtub with five to six inches of warm water. Set your shampoo and towels close at hand for quick access. Put your dog into the bathtub. Use a bowl or pitcher to scoop up water and wet him down.

    • 3

Start at the neck, apply shampoo and gently work it into the fur. Work your way down to the tail applying small amounts of shampoo. Continue by lathering up the belly, legs, in between the toes, behind the ears and under the chin. Avoid getting any soap near the eyes. Use a damp washcloth with no soap to wash your dog's face.

    • 4

Rinse your dog with fresh warm water using a bowl or pitcher. Continue to rinse until you see no more soap bubbles. Squeeze as much water out of the coat as possible with your hands if the dog is long-haired.

    • 5

Spread an old towel on the floor, remove your dog from the bathtub and place him on the towel. Remove the cotton balls from his ears. Dry him thoroughly with a towel using a brisk rubbing motion. Use a hair dryer set on medium if you need to dry your dog quickly or if he has a heavy coat. Finish by brushing your dog's coat to keep new tangles from forming.
