How to Rid a Maltese of Fleas

Fleas are no fun for any dog or dog owner. They can be especially difficult with a Maltese, as the breed's long hair provides plenty of places for fleas to hide. Acting fast helps ensure fleas don't get out of control. There are many options when deciding how to get rid of fleas on your Maltese. Many of the options can be used alone, or in conjunction with the other options.

Instructions

    • 1

Give your Maltese a bath. Use a dog shampoo specially formulated for flea treatment. Wash the dog's head first, as this is typically where the fleas will try to hide.

    • 2

Comb her hair. After a bath, use a flea comb to find as many fleas as possible on your Maltese. Keep a bowl of water handy and put any fleas you find in the bowl.

    • 3

Apply a topical treatment. There are several brands of topical flea treatment available. This is usually just a drop of medicine that is applied between the shoulder blades of your dog.

    • 4

Use a flea powder. Flea powder is a messy, yet effective, way to treat fleas. Watch your Maltese for signs of itching, as flea powders can lead to dry skin.

    • 5

Give him an oral medication. Ask your veterinarian for an oral medication to treat and prevent fleas.

    • 6

Treat your home for fleas. Wash carpets and all linens, vacuum floors and clean all pet bedding and toys. If fleas remain in your home, they will reinfect your dog.

    • 7

Treat any other pets in your home. Pets will pass fleas to each other.
