How to Treat Puppies With Flea Medicine

Fleas can be a nightmare for pets and their owners. These jumping insects set up house in the fur of cats and dogs, and live by biting into their hosts and sucking their blood. The biting can cause hair loss and allergies in some cases, and always causes itching and discomfort. Fleas move from animals to humans and can infest a house. One way to exterminate a flea population is with flea medicine like Frontline or Advantage. You can apply flea medicine to a puppy's back with a few easy steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh your puppy and buy flea medication based on its weight. Flea medication potency changes based on how much a dog weighs and how large an area the medicine needs to cover. If you can't weigh your puppy, judge based on the type of dog pictured on the front of the packaging.

    • 2

Purchase a flea medication that is safe for puppies. Flea medications label whether they are for mature dogs or puppies, and should never be used on puppies less than 7 weeks old.

    • 3

Open the tube of flea medication and squeeze the liquid directly onto the puppy's skin between his shoulder blades. Make sure you're squeezing the liquid onto the puppy's skin rather than his fur, so it doesn't rub off. Don't worry about spreading the medication around; it will spread on its own.

Wash your hands to avoid ingesting any of the medication, and be careful about petting the puppy immediately after you've applied flea medication.

    • 5

Repeat this process once a month, as the flea medication will wear off over time. Repeat after you bathe the puppy.
