Things You'll Need
- Commercial detangling spray for dog hair
- Comb or mat rake
- Scissors
Instructions
Spray one section of your dog's tangled fur with a commercial detangling spray for dog hair. The spray is designed to make it easier for you to comb the tangles or mats out of your dog's hair. Work in sections. Don't spray all of the tangled areas at once.
Comb through the matted hair with a comb or a mat rake. A mat rake has sharper teeth than a comb and may be more effective at separating the hair.
Cut large mats into vertical sections in order to make them more manageable. Hold the mat away from the dog's body and cut the mat into two or three sections, and proceed to detangle.
Consult with a professional groomer or your dog's veterinarian if the above steps do not remove the mats or tangles. He may have specialized tools to remove mats or tangles.
