Things You'll Need
- Hair dryer
- Plastic cone or e-collar
Instructions
Find a hair dryer to use. You will want this to be a hair dryer that you know works well, but not one that you are going to be using for yourself. It should have low, medium and high heat settings. If possible, it should also have a "cool" button that will make the air coming out of the dryer be cool instead of hot.
Buy an e-collar--the smallest one possible for a toy size or smaller dog. An e-collar is a plastic collar that is made to go in a cone shape around a dog's head. These are used when a dog has stitches or an injury, because it makes him unable to be able to scratch or chew on himself. You can also measure out the size of an e-collar and cut the same shape and size out of a regular piece of plastic.
Make the e-collar into a cone by bending it as shown in the directions printed on the collar. Usually this simply involves bending the collar into a cone, and fitting a tab into a slot on the collar.
Fit the e-collar around the edge of your hair dryer and tighten it until it fits around the dryer. Use duct tape to secure it if it won't secure itself.
Turn the hair dryer on to the "low" setting and put your fingers outside of the e-collar in order to test for yourself that the air coming out of the dryer is not too hot. The air should be warm, but should not be overly hot.
Run the hair dryer in the same room as your dog several times. This is done to get your dog used to the sound of the dryer. Allow him to sniff or explore the dryer while it is running. Do this before you actually dry your dog using the hairdryer. As you use the hair dryer, keep an eye on the plastic e-collar and make sure that it isn't getting too hot, because it could melt.
