How to Groom a Bichon Puppy

Bichon Frise puppies have long, thick coats that need regular grooming. A Bichon Frise that learns to be groomed at a young age will be easier to groom as an adult. Bichon grooming is not difficult, but it is a daily must that will prevent your Bichon's fur from matting.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Bichon Frise puppy daily with a soft brush comb to remove excess hair. Start off slowly as he is not yet used to being brushed or combed. Allow him to sniff the brush or comb before using it on him, and stop if he seems distressed.

    • 2

Check your Bichon puppy weekly for split nails, sores, bites, or anything that might need your immediate attention. Also check his teeth to make sure they do not have a buildup of tartar, and brush them as necessary. You should not need to brush your Bichon puppy's teeth until he is a little older, but getting him used to the toothbrush as a puppy will make it easier to use when he is an adult.

    • 3

Bathe your Bichon puppy every two weeks to a month with a shampoo designed for white dogs or thick fur. Make sure her coat is free from mats and tangles before you bathe her, as the water will make these worse.

    • 4

Towel dry your Bichon puppy and gently brush his coat. Blow dry his coat on a low or cool setting while constantly brushing to prevent tangling.

    • 5

Trim your Bichon puppy's coat once every month. Search the Internet for a picture of an appropriate cut, and style your Bichon puppy in a similar way. If your Bichon puppy will not stay still for a trim, have someone hold her steady and take it slowly. If your Bichon puppy shows any signs of stress, stop trimming her fur and start again when she has calmed down. Getting her used to being groomed now will make yours and your groomer's lives much easier in the long run.
