How to Care for a Maltese Coat

Maltese dogs feature a trademark white coat which can often grow to the floor if left untrimmed. As show dogs, they are prized for their coats. These dogs are often wonderful pets for anyone with allergies because the coat is hypoallergenic, but caring for the coat takes an investment of time because these dogs require daily brushing and weekly bathing. Still, keeping up with the task should be well within the capabilities of most dog owners.

Instructions

Begin by brushing the dog on a daily basis for long coats. If the dog keeps a puppy cut, brush them every few days. Use a comb to gently brush out knots or mats. Use the slicker brush to shine the coat. Brush hair in a downward motion. Do not forget to brush the tail.

Start a weekly bath ritual by placing the dog into the tub and clipping its nails. Run warm water and thoroughly wet the dog's entire body.

    • 3

Once the dog is thoroughly wet, carefully wash his face using a tear-free cleanser. Carefully wash around the eyes and ears. Pay attention to the dog's ears, looking for signs of wax buildup which could indicate an infection.

Wash the neck, body, tail and legs using a gentle shampoo for white coats. As the dog is being washed, comb out any tangles in the coat with your fingers.

Ring out the dog's coat before removing it from the tub. Towel dry the dog, and finish by blowing drying the coat using a hair dryer on a low setting.
