How to Get Knots Out of Poodles' Pompoms

Poodles have a curly coat that does not shed, but the curls cause the fur to knot easily. Professional dog groomers recommend that poodles be groomed every four to six weeks. A poodle's fur should be brushed daily with a soft slicker brush. It is difficult to keep knots from forming in a poodle's pompoms. The knots can be easily removed without leaving a hole in the fur. When properly done, no one can see that a knot was removed.

Instructions

  1. Removing Knots

    • 1

Use your fingers to find and isolate the knot. Gently pull any loose fur away from the knot, and separate the knot into sections, fanning it apart with the fingers.

    • 2

Brush the poodle's pompom gently in an outward motion with the slicker brush. This will remove small knots.

    • 3

Remove remaining larger knots by opening the scissors and inserting the bottom blade beneath the knot, with the sharp edge facing away from the poodle's skin. Pull the scissor blade through the knot, separating it into smaller sections, rather than cutting it out.

    • 4

Brush the pompom in the direction of the hair growth to remove the remaining pieces of knotted fur.

    • 5

Comb out the poodle's pompom to be sure all the knots are removed.
