How to Clip a Wire-Haired Dachshund

The coat of wire-haired dachshunds is much thicker and more wiry compared to other dachshund breeds, and wire-haired dachshunds have beards and eyebrows much like those found on terriers. Their coats need to be clipped differently than with other dachshunds. If you follow several steps for each area of the dachshund's coat, then your dachshund will be clipped and looking wonderful in minutes.

Instructions

  1. Grooming the Main Body

    • 1

Comb your dachshund's coat with the metal flea brush to remove any loose hairs.

    • 2

Wash your dachshund with the pet shampoo and rinse thoroughly--a clean coat is much easier to cut than a dirty one.

    • 3

Comb the dog's coat out with the pet comb. Let the coat dry.

    • 4

With your hands, gently pull at the hairs on the belly to get any that are loose. Then try to comb the hair on the main body and belly in a downward direction. Trim the hairs to the length you want--clipping a little closer near the genital region is best for sanitary reasons.

    • 5

Comb the dog again and reassess the length of the cut, taking off a little more with the sheers or scissors if needed.

Clipping the Head, Feet and Tail

    • 6

Hold the dachshund's snout with your non-dominant hand and tilt his head upward slightly. Comb out the beard with the pet comb, and trim with a downward angle toward the neck. Comb out the beard again with the pet comb. Hold the dog's chin in your hand, near the neck, and clip the front of the beard. Comb the beard again and repeat this process until the beard is even and at the length you want.

    • 7

Comb the hair around and over the eyebrows down toward the snout. Then simply pull the hairs up and back a bit at a time to remove them by hand.

    • 8

By hand, pull out any loose hair from around the paws and legs. You may need to hold the dachshund in your lap to see clearly the underside of the foot without the dog losing balance. Smooth the hair down around the paw, and then clip on the underside of the foot, following the lines of the pads. Then pull the hair of the paw back up and trim following the line of the top of the foot. Continue to follow the line of the leg.

    • 9

Pull the hair of the tail up and toward the tip of the tail to remove loose hairs. Then pull the hair of the tail down and trim with the scissors or sheers.

    • 10

Comb your dog completely, touching up areas that need it.
