How to Remove Mats From Wirehair Dog Coats

De-tangling mats in a dog's coat is time consuming. Wirehaired dogs are susceptible to mats because of the length and texture of their fur. A wiry coat can easily conceal mats underneath the ears, between the legs and toes and in the beard. The best remedy is prevention. Routine brushing and combing can keep a long-haired dog tangle-free. If mats occur despite meticulous routine grooming, follow this approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Calm the dog, and encourage her to assume a comfortable position. Give the command for the dog to lay down. If she does not comply, place her in the position.

    • 2

Divide the mat into small pieces lengthwise. A mat splitter may be used to divide the clump. Use the tool in a slicing motion to break the mat. Comb the free hairs to smooth and separate them. In lieu of professional grooming supplies, finger tips or a straight comb work.

    • 3

Hold what's left of the mat firmly with one hand, keeping slack between your grip and the scalp of the dog. Below the mat, free loose hairs using finger tips or a comb. Work from the end of the hair toward where it joins with the dog.

    • 4

Once the mat has been loosened, comb the matted area from the sides. The comb will grab and smooth loose hairs.

    • 5

Spray affected area with a detangling product.

    • 6

Continue to comb the area until the mat has disappeared.

    • 7

Bathe the dog after all mats have been sufficiently removed.
