Homemade Grooming Table & Tub

You love your dog, so why take him to a stranger to have him groomed when you can easily do it at home? To do that, you need the right tools. A grooming table is easy to construct and will provide all the necessities to grooming your pooch. Building a grooming table can be an inexpensive project you can complete in an afternoon.
  1. Find/Build a Table

    • The easiest and most durable solution for a dog grooming table is to purchase a small, stainless steel table. This requires virtually no construction̵2;it's waterproof, it will last forever, and you can probably find one cheaply in town. Visit your local restaurant-supply stores. A brand new stainless steel table, depending on the size, can run several hundred dollars. But you can find a used table for much less. The ideal table would be stainless steel with an attached sink or tub.

If you can̵7;t find or can̵7;t afford a stainless steel table, construct one from wood. While there are several ways to construct a wooden table, the most important thing to remember is waterproofing the top and ensuring the stability of the legs, especially if your dog weighs more than 30 or 40 pounds.

    Adding Water

    • You can̵7;t wash your dog without water. Whether you built a wooden table or purchased a stainless steel table that did not include a sink or tub, you will need to install a wash basin if you don̵7;t already have one. Utility sinks come equipped in most newer homes, but if you don̵7;t have one already in your laundry room or garage, you can purchase one in a variety of sizes. Installing it, however, is a little more difficult. If you don̵7;t have plumbing experience, consider hiring someone to install the sink.

If you want to avoid purchasing a sink, you can use a deep wash basin or stainless steel tub, available at most hardware stores. You̵7;ll have to fill the basin with warm water by hand and find a place to dump it, but this is definitely the cheaper option.

    Add a Leash Hook

    • Add a leash hook to your table to prevent your pooch from scampering away. This may not be necessary depending on your dog, but many K-9s like to break away from their groomers before they complete the job. You can install a hook in a number of ways.

The best leash hook is a metal stake attached to the edge of the table with a loop on the end. You can use a stake that is intended for outdoors, but weld it or screw it onto the side of the table.

    Electrify Your Table

    • Place your grooming table near an electrical outlet for trimmers and blow dryers. If an electrical outlet is not available, you can add one to the table. If you do not have experience with installing electrical outlets, do not attempt this without the supervision of someone experienced.

Be careful to keep the electrical outlet away from the wash basin.
