Keep the Mats Away
-
Mats are large knots that occur in the hair coat. The mats tend to accumulate very close to the skin, making it uncomfortable for the dog. There are ways in which to remove the mats, but it typically inflicts pain on the dog. Therefore, preventing mats is key. Because of the soft, cottony texture of a bichon̵7;s hair coat, it is prone to matting when it becomes wet.
To prevent matting, be sure to dry the hair with a professional force blow dryer as soon as it becomes wet. In addition, brush your bichon̵7;s coat once a day to prevent any matting. Be sure to pay attention to your dog̵7;s face and stomach when brushing, as these are common places for mats to occur. Brushing will also aid in removing any undercoat that is on the bichon. This type of fur tends to tangle and mat easily. If your bichon is completely matted, it is probably best to totally shave the fur and try again when the hair grows back.
Tools of the Trade

Tear staining, reddish or brown streaks from the corners of the eyes, is a common occurrence in this breed and because of their white coats, it is easy to see. Therefore, using a good tear-stain remover is essential.
In addition, de-matting spray is also helpful to have on hand as it can make removing mats a lot easier for the groomer and the dog. A good type of brush to use on bichons is a slicker brush. The bristles on a slicker brush are designed to remove undercoat. However, the bristles can be irritating to the skin of some dogs, therefore, monitor your bichon̵7;s skin for any redness or scratches when using the brush. If possible, purchase a slicker brush that advertises gentler bristles.
If you plan on cutting your bichon̵7;s hair, you will need good-quality clippers and shavers. Every groomer has his own preference about which brand works the best. However, expect to pay a high amount for good quality equipment. As of 2009, grooming scissors alone can run in the $300 range.
Most groomers use their own combination of shampoos on bichons. A common shampoo to use is one that will whiten the coat. If your bichon has skin problems ̵1; as many typically do ̵1; you may want to use a shampoo that contains oatmeal or other soothing ingredients.
Be sure to have styptic powder on hand when cutting your bichon̵7;s nails. Most bichons have clear nails which makes identifying the quick (the pink part of the nail that contains blood vessels) fairly simple. However, it is always possible to cut the nail too short and cause it to bleed. Applying styptic powder to the nail will stop the bleeding.
In addition, it is important to keep hair out of a bichon̵7;s ears in order for the canals to stay dry and healthy. Most groomers use their fingers or hemostats to remove the hair. Applying an ear powder to the hair makes removal a lot easier.
