How to Get Rid of Tear Stains

Tear stains are found below some dogs' eyes and have different causes, including irritation, genetics, fleas, ear infections and yeast infections on the face. Your vet can help you determine the exact cause of your pet's tear stains to prevent them from happening again. In the meantime, you can clean off the stains using some common household products.

  • Cotton swab
  • Cornstarch
  • Guarded clippers
  • Milk of magnesia
  • Hydrogen peroxide

      Mix an equal amount of hydrogen peroxide, milk of magnesia and cornstarch together until the mixture becomes pasty. Make a cup full of it to last the whole week. The mixture needs to be thick and not runny.

      Rub the mixture carefully on your dogs tear stains with a cotton swab. Apply it without getting it in your dogs eyes. Take your time and only use a small amount . The mixture should only cover the stain and not the clean fur on your dog. Leave it on until it drys and then gently clean it off with a warm damp washcloth.

      Re-apply the mixture to your dog's tear stains until they are completely gone. It should take no more than a week to get rid of the tear stains below your dog's eyes.
