How to Minimize the Shedding of Dog Hair

One thing people consider when searching for a new dog is how much it sheds. They might want a specific breed or mixed-breed dog that is low shedding so they have less pet hair and dander to deal with. But all dogs shed at least a little. With dedication and a few tricks, though, you can reduce the amount any dog sheds.

  1. Minimizing the Shedding

    • 1

Use a deshedding tool, available in most pet stores. Deshedding combs can help remove much of the loose, dead hair that otherwise ends up on your furniture and clothes. Popular brands include the Furminator and bamboo. To further decrease future shedding, use these tools at least once a week for low-shedding dogs and more often for dogs that shed a lot.

    • 2

Bathe your dog with a shedding-control shampoo. This shampoo loosens dead hair so it can be rinsed away. Some of these shampoos need to be left on the dog for a bit longer than regular shampoo. Follow the instructions on the bottle for maximum effectiveness.

Feed a high-quality food. Using food that is four-star rated or higher ensures that your dog is getting the most nutrition possible. This helps to solve many skin issues, including excessive shedding. High-quality food promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat that stays attached to your dog and not your clothes or furniture.

Add Omega-3 or fish oil to your dog's diet. Some dogs do not have enough fat in their diets to make their coats shiny and healthy. The fatty acids in an Omega-3 or fish oil supplement will promote overall coat and skin health.

See your veterinarian. If these steps do not reduce the amount of shedding in your home, have your dog checked for parasites and diseases that could be causing the shedding. Also have the dog examined for food and environmental allergies.
