Instructions
Purchase the proper bathing ingredients for your dogs. Avoid washing your pet with a normal soap or shampoo. The skin pH of dogs is not the same as humans, so using products designed for us may increase dryness and flaking in dogs. Use good quality dog shampoos that do not have harsh chemicals that may irritate the skin, causing dryness. Look for products that mention on the label that they target dry, flaking skin.
Gather everything that you need to bathe your dog so that you do not have to search for items after you have started washing your pet. Dogs often will run away if they are scared by water.
Brush your dog's coat with a metal-pronged brush to eliminate flakes present on the skin and in the fur. Brush your dog daily to help improve blood circulation and clear off excess flakes that accumulate between bathing. Place cotton balls in the ears to prevent water from getting in.
Fill the tub with warm water. Make sure the water is at the right temperature. Place your dog inside the tub. Guide large dogs into the tub with a small treat or favorite toy. If you prefer to bathe your dog outdoors, fill a bucket with warm water. Use a hose to quickly wet your dog.
Apply shampoo. Using the shampoo, massage the entire body, starting with the back, for 10 minutes. Avoid getting shampoo in the dog's eyes or mouth. Gently rub the shampoo into the skin to promote moisture absorption and stimulate circulation.
Rinse thoroughly with water and wash cloths. Rinse well to prevent shampoo residue, which may irritate skin and cause dryness. Dry your dog with a towel until all moisture is absorbed and the coat is barely damp. This may take up to five minutes.
Brush the dog's fur and skin with a soft-bristled brush. Pay attention to nails, toes and paws, which are often overlooked. Use long strokes beginning at the head and drag the brush through the coat toward the tail.
