Interchangeability
-
Both Oster and Andis make clippers with blades that interchange. Oster blades are the standard for clipper blade size and both companies recognize that. If you do go with an Andis clipper, be sure the clipper head accepts Oster-type blades, or you will be forced to use only proprietary blades from Andis.
Clipper Price
-
Both Oster and Andis make clippers for pet owners and professional groomers. Pet owner clippers range $145 to $180 from Oster and $45 to $90 from Andis. Professional groomer clippers (which are better made and last longer) cost between $130 to $250 from either company.
Clipper Features
-
Both Oster and Andis have corded and cordless clippers and dual-speed clippers. Cordless clippers tend to run out of energy after an hour and must be recharged. Some Andis professional clippers have an extra feature of a lighted blade that enables the user to see the dog's skin in shadowed areas.
Clipper Blades
-
Although this is not necessarily a reason for changing to one or the other brand, given that you should be buying a standardized clipper, the clipper blades are worth noting. Andis has ceramic blades, which cool down faster and provide a sharper cut than steel blades, and also has steel blades. Oster has steel blades and a new antimicrobial silver type of blade called a Cryogen-X AgION blade that controls bacteria, mold and mildew.
Which Do People Like Better?
-
There is a lack of consensus as to which clipper people prefer. Some prefer the Oster because it is powerful; others like the Andis for detail and its relative quietness. Some have had problems with Andis clippers; others have had problems with Oster clippers. Still others go with something else. Overall, it's a matter of preference and finding the clipper that works right for you and your dog.

Andis Vs. Oster Clippers
Many dog breeds require clipping to maintain a neat appearance and a healthy coat. Dogs that need clipping are generally single-coated breeds such as the Poodle, the Cocker Spaniel (American and English), the Irish Setter and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. While many pet owners opt to have their dogs groomed by professional groomers, dogs still need touch-ups in between grooming trips and many owners are grooming their own dogs. But what clippers are the best?
