Using Electric Scissors for Dogs

When it comes to grooming dogs, many owners prefer to use electric scissors. Electric scissors for pets are also commonly known as clippers or shavers. Obviously, one may only want to trim the dog's hair, so it's important to know the best way for controlling the clippers.
  1. Find the Best Clipper

    • When you first purchase a clipper, don't just go with the cheapest option. Never use a clipper that is not intended for dogs or cats. Using a clipper intended for people could seriously hurt or damage your dog's skin. Consider the size of your dog and how much fur they have you want to trim. Consider purchasing a clipper that comes with a variety of interchangeable blades. Consider a professional clipper known for its strength and durability. An example of a clipper that works well is the Oster Turbo A5 Two-Speed clipper (see Resources). Make sure you can control the speed of the clipper properly and get through rough areas of fur that might include lumps. Such clippers are also pain free for your dog. You don't want your dog to fear having his hair trimmed because you used a rough blade or cheap clipper.

    Using the Clipper

    • Before using the clipper, it's best to lubricate the blade. Using Kool Lube will keep the blade cool enough for the dog without feel too much heat from the blade. The lube will also help make smoother trims without getting caught or stuck in the dog's coat. Test the blade slightly on your forearm to make sure it's not too hot for the dog. Use the appropriate size of blade as well. Keep in mind that the lower number of blade will leave more hair on the dog. For example, a blade is usually used for thick summer cuts and a #4F blade for small trimming (see References). For trimming around the face, ears, stomach and other delicate areas, take every precaution to not cut the dogs skin. For these areas, it's best to use aor(blade. Also, never clip a dog who is dirty or wet. Give the dog a bath before trimming and make sure he is entirely dry. When clipping, always go against the hair-growth pattern. Use a comb and brush to remove excess hair once you're finished trimming.

    Clipper Care

    • The blade of the clipper must always be lubricated before you use it. Never use oil-based cleaning products or WD40 to clean the clippers or blades.Clean the blades and clipper every time after use. Use a small brush to get out all dirt or excess hair and lubricant. Wipe the blades and clipper with a dry, clean cloth. Never soak the blades or clipper in soap and hot water. Oil the blades after cleaning to avoid rusting. Cleaning oil or lubricant can be found where dog clippers are sold. Store the blades clean and with the oil on them. Wrap the clean blades in paper towels and an air-tight plastic bag.
