Organic Flea Shampoo Recipe
-
Creating your own shampoo is cheap, easy and more healthy for you and your pet. The main ingredient in this shampoo is soapwort root. Soapwort root is gathered from the inner bark of a tree. It foams so that you can have a luscious lather as you would using any shampoo. In addition, soapwort root is rich in saponins which act as a mild cleansing agent with the added benefit of healing properties. This is also important as many pets with fleas have small wounds from all of the flea bites.
Bring two cups of distilled water to a boil. Once the water begins to boil add one and a half teaspoons of soapwort root. Reduce the heat to a low temperature and cover the pot to steam. Allow the mixture to simmer for around 15 minutes.
Add Essential Oils
-
Essential oils add beautiful fragrance to your flea shampoo. These oils are natural and gentle to your pets irritated skin. More importantly essential oils create an undesirable environment for fleas to reside. Some essential oils include lavender, rosemary, peppermint and lemon.
Six drops of essential oil should be added to every two ounces of shampoo. The organic shampoo recipe calls for eight ounces. After the organic shampoo is fully cooled combine in a total of 24 drops of essential oil. You can choose to use any one or several different essential oils to create a unique scent. After adding oil, mix the shampoo thoroughly.
Use and Store Flea Shampoo
-
After completing your homemade flea shampoo recipe you can start using it immediately. Shake well before eash use as the the oil and shampoo seperate after sitting. Use it just as you would any other shampoo. Wet your animal first with room temperature water. Lather the flea shampoo throughout their fur. Work your fingers at the roots of their fur ensuring that your cover all of their skin as well. Allow the shampoo to sit for several minutes. Rinse away the flea shampoo well and repeat weekly until fleas are gone.
Store your homemade flea shampoo in an air-tight container. You can use an old shampoo bottle or even a plastic food container. Since this organic shampoo contains no preservatives you will need to store it in the fridge and it is only good for about 10 days.
